Management by Trust Instead of Fear By Michael Campbell. Management by trust instead of fear. How positive rewards can get people to do what you want, be part of the team and work together in a happy environment. Management is the act of directing, guiding, controlling, administrating for a purpose. How one "manages" however, is usually up to the individual. Management of people, like teaching and training usually relies on positive or negative reinforcement for ones actions. Positive reinforcement can be thought of as building trust, whereas negative reinforcement can be thought of as spreading fear. Fear focuses on what was done wrong, puts people down, belittles them, makes them feel unworthy. Trust focuses on what was done right, looks at how much was achieved, makes people happy and more likely to perform even better the next time. Fear yells at the employees and makes public humiliation a weapon. People will start avoiding public contact with the manager. Trust talks quietly and never reprimands one employee in front of another. Everything that is said remains private, with one to one meetings held in a separate room.

Fear says don't do this, or you're fired, don't do that, or you're fired. Fear holds the job and never gives a sense it is truly yours. Trust leads by example and says do this, do that, gives power and decision making capability to the employee, making them feel the job is truly theirs to do.

No one likes a manager that uses fear. Employee turnover is likely to be very high. Employees probably won't care. They just punch the clock to get a paycheck. Everyone likes someone they can trust. With trust, employees are likely to put in years of service and take pride in the work they do.

Fear leads to animosity and bitterness between employees. They are not likely to develop friendships or good will towards each other. They are likely to compete against each other, rather than the true competition. Trust creates team players, employees that work together for the common good of the organization, realizing they are "in the same boat." Together - as a company - they sink or swim.

Fear leads employees to say, it wasn't me, it was like that when I found it, I don't know. Trust leads employees to be accountable for their actions, to learn from mistakes, so everyone can help each other from preventing the same mistake from happening again.

Fear destroys creativity and freezes employees into predictable mindless patterns, where they are afraid of change and self improvement. Trust spawns creativity where employees constantly think about better ways of doing their jobs, to anticipate and adapt to change, and not be afraid of failure, or trying new things.

As you can see, all behavior can be modified quite simply by using positive reinforcement. If the reinforcement happens at the same time as the action, it increases the likelihood that the positive action will happen again.

By being a positive person, setting a good example, offering encouragement, forgiving mistakes, talking quietly, people are more likely to listen to you. Especially if you reward them for a job well done. It could be a simple pat on the back, a handshake, or other little bonus like getting off early.

That's the most important thing of all, to recognize all the achievements, even the small ones. Say good catch if someone prevents a mistake. Say good job to a person in front of the other employees and supervisors. For positive reinforcement, recognition of an achievement, is the greatest motivator of all.

Remember, fear is all about punishment. It is an absence of love and compassion. It brings up painful emotions like anxiety, apprehension and dread. It is impending danger and the expectation of evil.

Trust is all about goodness. It is faith and belief in the integrity, confidence, reliance, and friendship of another person. It is certainty, dependence, assurance, an entirely positive state of mind.

What type of teacher, trainer, parent and manager will you be?

    New Patriots Rules in Effect:
In order to address the complaints and hurt feelings of the rest of the NFL,
the commissioner has adopted 10 new "Special Rules" for all New England
Patriots games. They take effect immediately, and are as follows:

    Special Rules for the Patriots

    1) In the course of an NFL game, if the Patriots go up by more than 31
points, they are not allowed to play offense until the opposing team draws
to within one score. (Pats will kick-off after an opposing team's touchdown
or FG). Once the team is within one score, the Pats offense may play, but
Tom Brady may not, unless: the Pats play with 8 players (including Tom), or
the Pats play with 9 players, but 1 player for the Patriots is chosen by the
opposing team from the stands. no Patriots linebacker is allowed to play
offense, unless that LB is inserted at quarterback. However, Mike Vrabel
    cannot be quarterback.

    2) If an opposing player states "It's like were playing 7-on-5s" (7 offense,
5 defense during practice), such as indicated by Justin Smith, DE,
Cincinnati Bengals 10/1/07, the Patriots must take a time out and serve ice
cold lemonade or hot tea (weather dependent) to the opposing team. Scones
    are optional.

    3) Once the 31 pt rule is in effect, Patriots may challenge any play, but
the opposing team gets veto power over the referee.

    4) Once the Pats offense is allowed back onto the field (7 pts), for any
forward pass the Pats QB must point to the receiver and call out his number
BEFORE passing. If Tom Brady is quarterbacking at the time, he must do that,
plus turn the opposing team's water cooler into wine BEFORE passing.

    5) Belichick must diagram any Patriots play to the opposing defense and
ensure they understand exactly how to disrupt the play. This all must be
done within the play clock. If this process is not complete prior to the
play clock expiring, the Patriots will be assessed a delay of game and
    double unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.

    6) Randy Moss must play with 10lb ankle weights on each ankle. An additional
pound will be added for each TD this season.

    7) Wes Welker is not allowed to have "that crazy look" in his eyes. 10 yd,
    "crazy eyes"penalty assessed.

    8) Tom Brady must immediately stop dating super-models as he will not be
allowed to date anyone that is more attractive then the least attractive
significant other of an opposing team member (including coaches). He also
must start doing commercials for every product imaginable, especially ones
where he chants "cut that meat!"or refers to himself "as a 6'5" quarterback
with a laser-rocket arm" ( Oh wait sorry, isn't that Peyton?)

    9) Bill Belichick is not allowed to be within 100 yds of any infant, for
fear that his evil super-genius powers would assimilate such a defenseless
creature into the Patriots System. We have already seen this effect on an
inordinate amount of chipmunks, squirrels, and 'possum that commit suicide
while crossing Rte 1 to reach Gillette Stadium.

    10) Patriots must respect all opposing players feelings and apologize for
every first down. Touchdowns must be followed by a written apology and a
fruit basket presented with a hug.

And then tell me how the actions of one cop represent all cops.

It was almost a year ago and I am not sure if the internet holds stories
that long. So I cannot prove anything. But in general terms some
adventurers were trying to climb Mt Hood and some weather set in and
somebody called the head cop and asked him if he should declare a situation
and send some helicopters. The Head Cop was busy in front of his teevee
watching Boise State or somebody in some college football Bowl and did not
care to be bothered with those details. So the adventurers all died because
the cop was lazy and self-indulgent.

    Laurence Maroney, take note
    Date:Tuesday 11 December 2007 10:32
    Author:jdonaldson@projo.com

The Patriots' underachieving, only-semi-durable, second-year running back
might want to ponder these comments by Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy
regarding the until recently unheralded Ryan Grant, who rushed for 156
yards on 29 carries Sunday against the Raiders: "I really like the way he
runs. No wasted steps. One cut. Always moving forward. That's the style
in the NFL that works best, I think." Maroney was drafted 21st overall by
New England in 2006. Grant was obtained by the Packers this year from the
Giants in exchange for a late-round draft pick, after spending the 2005
season in New York on the practice squad and last season on the Injured
Reserve list. Unlike Grant, Maroney tries to make too many cuts, does too
much dancing, too often runs East-West, instead of North-South. As the
weather worsens, and it becomes increasingly difficult to throw the
football consistently, the Patriots will need to rely more on Maroney,
who thus far in his brief career has not run as well as his former
teammate at Minnesota, the Cowboys' Marion Barber.

I agree. I think Morris going down was a horrible and underestimated

Yes, but of course he was referring to *this* postseason. ;)
But AFA next season, think the Steelers will finally do something about
the field at the Razor? The league forced the Pats to "fix" theirs!

You're saying they won't face each other if the Steelers don't?

To me the biggest sucker is the one who buys virtual furniture.

My understanding is the movement against on line gambling originates
with the credit card companies and the banks.

The complaints genarally are not against on line gambling itself
but the credit fraud that often accompanies it.

If the on line gambling industry is to survive they have
to figure out a way to do it without the accompanying credit
    card fraud.

IMHO you can gamble on line. But no you can't use my
    credit card to do it.

I have yet to find anyone with a solution to this problem.

(My understanding too is if you use a credit card and
it's for gambling that the credit card issuer can't
    collect the debt.)

Online gambling can't be regulated and all the funds go overseas.
Resort gambling is under strict regulations and is taxed, sending
